The Perfect Storm: Our Climate and NZ's Resilience into the Future

The last in the Speaker Series webinars will look at the systemic nature of climate change risks and insurance.
What is the extent of the challenge globally and how insurable are the risks? Are there non-traditional roles for the insurance sector to play to support climate change adaptation? How will the reinsurance sector support the growing demand for cover? What does all this mean for New Zealand to build a more resilient economy?
We will hear from a leading climate researcher on the impact of escalating hazards on property prices and insurance availability; a global reinsurer to look at the interdependency of climate related impacts, and where insurance has a role to play with solutions and when it cannot; and discuss the adaptation challenges and priorities to reduce New Zealand’s climate risks.

President and CEO Insurance Bureau Canada (IBC) and President of Global Federation of Insurance Associations (GFIA)
Appointed Insurance Bureau of Canada’s President and CEO in 2009, Don has a successful track record of over 30 years in the property and casualty (P&C) insurance industry. He has a strong foundation in the public and private sectors, having worked for Alberta’s Department of Environment and the National Research Council in Nova Scotia early in his career. As President and CEO, Don works with governments and key stakeholders across the country to build a strong, stable P&C industry and a stronger and safer Canada. He is also leading a national conversation on the need to better prepare for an earthquake in various parts of Canada and finally, has played a leadership role in the dialogue for helping the country better respond to our changing climate with a focus on flooding events.
Don is also a leader involved in the international insurance issues that increase industry effectiveness and provide input to regulatory bodies. He is a founding member of the Global Federation of Insurance Associations, serves on its Executive Committee, and leads an international working group focused on innovation.
Head Sustainability Reinsurance, Swiss Re group
Gillian Rutherford-Liske is Head of Sustainability of Swiss Re’s Reinsurance business unit. Having worked on updating Swiss Re’s Group Sustainability strategy, her focus is on bringing that strategy to life in embedding sustainability principles and actions throughout the business. An integral part of this is to partner with insurers and other key stakeholders to address societies sustainability challenges via insurance products, services and solutions. She is a passionate environmental scientist with a 14-year track record in various reinsurance roles ranging from product development to risk management to five years as Head of Strategy of Swiss Re’s global insurance client division. Most recently she co-authored a landmark Swiss Re publication entitled “Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services: a business case for re/insurance.”
Originally from New Zealand, she studied Botany and Plant Ecology, with a particular focus on wetland and forest ecosystems. She moved to Switzerland in 1998, completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Sciences from the ETH Zürich and has worked at Swiss Re ever since.

Belinda is a principal investigator with the Deep South National Science Challenge and is Managing Director of the Whakahura Extreme Events and the Emergence of Climate Change MBIE funded research programme. She serves as a director on the board of Pamu – Landcorp Farming Ltd, is a professional member of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors. Previously Belinda served on the Mayoral Taskforce on insurance.
Bryce Davies
Executive Manager Corporate Relations, IAG New Zealand
Bryce is responsible for IAGs presence and standing within New Zealand through its relationships with governments and its social responsibility. Bryce has a strong focus on environmental, social and governance issues and leads IAG’s response to climate change in New Zealand. Bryce is a member of the Aotearoa Circle’s Sustainable Finance Leadership Forum, a member of the Government’s former Climate Change Adaptation Working Group and a regular speaker on climate change issues.
Before joining IAG, Bryce held a number of reputation, advocacy and risk focused roles with the Commonwealth Bank’s banking, life insurance and funds management businesses here in New Zealand and in Australia. Before that Bryce was part of the EY’s management consulting practice in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, focusing on the public and financial services sectors.
